Static codes, dynamic codes and what you actually need
Most confusion in this area comes from one distinction. Knowing which kind of code you are making explains expiry, tracking, editing and why some generators want your email address.
This is a static QR code generator
The code encodes your content directly. Scan it and the phone reads exactly what you typed, with nothing in between.
That is why these codes never expire and why nobody can track who scans them. There is no server involved after you download the image, so there is nothing to switch off, nothing to bill for and nothing to log.
What a dynamic QR code generator does differently
A dynamic QR code generator encodes a short redirect link owned by the provider. Scanning it hits their server first, which then forwards the visitor to wherever the code currently points.
That buys two things. You can change the destination after printing, and you get scan analytics. It costs you a permanent dependency: the code works only while that company keeps the redirect alive and your account current.
This tool does not do that, deliberately. If you need to edit a destination after printing, point a static code at a URL you control and change what sits at that address instead. You keep the flexibility without handing anyone a switch.
Free, and why that needs saying
Searches for a free QR code generator no expiration, or a QR code generator free no expiration, exist because people have been caught out. A code printed on a thousand menus stops working when a trial ends, which happens with dynamic codes and cannot happen with static ones.

The theoretical limit is a few thousand characters, but density rises fast. A short link produces a coarse pattern that scans from across a room, and three paragraphs of text produce a fine mesh that needs a large print size and a steady hand.

Codes that actually scan
Most unscannable QR codes fail for one of a handful of reasons. These are them.
- Keep strong contrast between the two colours. Dark pattern on a light background is what scanners expect, and inverting it stops many phones reading the code at all.
- Leave the quiet zone switched on. The blank margin is part of the specification and helps scanners find the edges of the code.
- Test with a real phone before printing. Scan it from the distance and angle people will actually use.
- Shorter content makes a simpler pattern. Long text produces a dense grid that needs a bigger print size to scan reliably.
- For print, download the SVG. It stays sharp at any size, whereas a PNG enlarged for a poster goes soft at the edges.
- Size the printed code for its viewing distance. As a rule of thumb, about one centimetre of code for every ten centimetres away the scanner will be.
