What happens when you merge PDF files
Joining PDFs is not the same as joining images or text files. A PDF carries fonts, page trees and object references, and combining two of them means rebuilding all of that into one consistent document.

Why quality does not change
A merge copies page objects from one document into another. The glyphs, the embedded fonts, the image streams and the vector instructions all move across byte for byte, and nothing is re-encoded on the way.
That is why a merged PDF looks identical to its sources, keeps text selectable, and preserves any links inside the pages. It is also why the output is roughly the sum of the inputs. Nothing has been thrown away, so nothing has shrunk.
Compression is a separate step, and Compress PDF handles it after the fact if the combined file is too large to email.
Order is the thing people get wrong
Files are joined exactly as listed, top to bottom, and each keeps its own internal page order. Selecting a folder does not guarantee the order you expect, because operating systems sort names in ways that surprise people: file10 often lands before file2.
Rename with leading zeros if you rely on sorting, or just check the list before pressing Merge. Fixing the sequence beforehand takes seconds; fixing it afterwards means opening the result in Organize PDF and moving pages around.
What merging cannot do
It cannot open an encrypted file. A PDF with an open password has to be unlocked first, which is what the Unlock PDF tool is for.
It cannot reorder pages within a file, only whole documents. For page-level work, including deleting and rotating, use Organize PDF instead.
It also cannot merge a PDF with a Word file or an image directly. Convert those first, then merge, which is exactly why the converters and this tool sit next to each other.
Merging cleanly
A little preparation avoids having to do it twice.
- Check the order before merging. The list runs top to bottom, and fixing it now is quicker than reorganising pages afterwards.
- Name your files so they sort the way you want. It makes selecting a large batch far less fiddly.
- Remove passwords first. A locked PDF cannot be opened for reading, so unlock it before merging.
- Tidy each file first if some contain blank or unwanted pages. Organize PDF is the quicker way to do that.
- Expect the result to be about the size of all the inputs added together. Compress it afterwards if it needs to go by email.
- Merging never re-encodes anything, so text stays selectable and images keep their original quality.
