HOW TO

How to merge PDF files

One document is easier to send, print and file than a handful of separate attachments.

  1. 1

    Add your PDFs

Drag the files in or click to browse. Add them all at once or a few at a time — each new file joins the end of the list.

  2. 2

    Set the order

Files are joined from top to bottom. Move any file up or down, or remove one you did not mean to include.

  3. 3

    Merge and download

Press Merge and the combined PDF is built and downloaded. Pages are copied across untouched, so quality is unchanged.

USE CASES

When separate files should be one

Anywhere a set of documents belongs together.

Application packs

Combine a CV, cover letter and certificates into the single file most forms ask for.

Invoices and statements

Join a run of monthly documents into one file for your records or your accountant.

Reports with appendices

Attach supporting documents to the end of a report so nothing gets separated.

Scanned chapters

Bring pages scanned in batches back together as one continuous document.

Contracts and annexes

Keep an agreement and its schedules in a single file so they travel together.

Course handouts

Bundle a set of worksheets into one document to print or share in order.

TIPS

Merging cleanly

A little preparation avoids having to do it twice.

  • Check the order before merging. The list runs top to bottom, and fixing it now is quicker than reorganising pages afterwards.
  • Name your files so they sort the way you want. It makes selecting a large batch far less fiddly.
  • Remove passwords first. A locked PDF cannot be opened for reading, so unlock it before merging.
  • Tidy each file first if some contain blank or unwanted pages — Organize PDF is the quicker way to do that.
  • Expect the result to be about the size of all the inputs added together. Compress it afterwards if it needs to go by email.
  • Merging never re-encodes anything, so text stays selectable and images keep their original quality.
