How to convert a PDF to Word

A PDF fixes text in place for printing. Converting it back to DOCX pulls that text out and rebuilds it as paragraphs you can edit. Here is the whole process.

    Drag a PDF onto the upload area or click to browse your device. The file is read straight from your machine — nothing is sent anywhere.

    Press Convert to DOCX. Each page is read in turn and its text rebuilt as Word paragraphs in reading order, with the progress shown page by page.

TIPS

What converts well

This converter rebuilds the text of your document, not its design. Knowing where that line falls saves you cleanup afterwards.

  • Text-based PDFs convert cleanly. If you cannot select the text in a PDF reader, the page is an image and there is nothing to extract — use Image to Text instead.
  • Simple, single-column documents give the best results. Letters, reports and articles come through close to the original.
  • Multi-column layouts are read in reading order rather than rebuilt as columns, so newspaper-style pages will need rearranging afterwards.
  • Tables lose their grid. The cell text comes across, but you will need to rebuild the table structure in Word.
  • Images, logos, headers and footers are not carried over — the converter works on text only.
  • Remove any password from the PDF first with the Unlock PDF tool, since a locked file cannot be opened for reading.
