HOW TO

How to convert Word to PDF

A Word file reflows depending on the machine that opens it. A PDF fixes the layout in place, which is why almost everything official asks for one.

  1. 1

    Choose your Word file

Drag a .docx onto the upload area or click to browse. Older .doc files are not supported — re-save them as .docx in Word or Google Docs first.

  2. 2

    Convert it

Press Convert to PDF. The document is uploaded, rendered to PDF on our server, and the result comes straight back to you.

  3. 3

    Download the PDF

Save the finished file, named after your document. Your upload is deleted from the server as soon as the download completes.

USE CASES

When you need a PDF

Any time the document is finished and the layout has to stay put.

Sending final documents

Share a report as a PDF so it looks the same on every device and cannot be edited by accident.

Job applications

Submit a CV or cover letter in the format most application systems ask for.

Invoices and quotes

Turn a Word template into a fixed document a client cannot accidentally alter.

Printing reliably

Lock the layout before printing so page breaks and fonts do not shift on another machine.

Archiving

Store a document in a format that will still open correctly years from now.

Email attachments

Send something that opens on any phone without needing Word installed.

TIPS

Getting a clean conversion

Most conversion problems come down to the file format or the fonts. These cover both.

  • Save as .docx before uploading. A .doc file renamed to .docx will fail, because the two formats are completely different inside.
  • Stick to common fonts. If a font is not available on the server it will be substituted, which can change line breaks.
  • Check the result before sending it on, especially if the document uses complex tables, columns or floating images.
  • Embed images at the size you need. Very large images make the upload slow without improving the PDF.
  • Close the document in Word before uploading, so you are converting the saved version rather than an out-of-date copy.
  • Need the file to stay on your device? Most of our other tools run entirely in your browser — this one cannot, and we say so plainly.
