Adding an image to an existing PDF

Which formats go in
JPG, PNG, WEBP and GIF all work, and you can mix them freely in one document. Each image is redrawn onto a canvas before it is embedded, which is what lets formats that PDF does not natively support end up inside one anyway.
TIFF is the awkward one. It is common in scanning and publishing, browsers vary in whether they can decode it, and a multi-page TIFF will only ever contribute its first frame. If a TIFF refuses to load, convert it to PNG first and add that instead.
Page size, or why there are empty bands
A4 and Letter are fixed shapes. A phone photo is 4:3 or 3:2, and neither matches paper, so an image placed on A4 leaves blank strips at the top and bottom.
Fit-to-image solves it by making each page exactly the proportions of its picture. The result is a document with pages of varying sizes, which is perfect on screen and awkward at a printer.
Choose A4 or Letter when the file will be printed. Choose fit-to-image when it will be read on a screen.
Quality and file size
Photographs are re-encoded as JPEG at high quality, since storing a photo losslessly makes an enormous file for no visible gain. Screenshots, logos and anything with transparency are stored as PNG instead, which keeps text and hard edges sharp.
The finished PDF is roughly the size of the images that went into it. If it needs to go by email, run it through Compress PDF afterwards, which is far more effective than shrinking each photo by hand beforehand.
Getting a tidy document
The PDF preserves exactly what you give it, so most of the work happens before you press convert.
- Put the images in the right order before converting. The number on each thumbnail is the page it will become.
- Use fit-to-image if your pictures are not the shape of a sheet of paper. It sizes every page to its image instead of leaving empty bands.
- Photograph documents straight on and in even light. The PDF preserves what you shot, so a skewed photo stays skewed.
- Set the margin to zero for edge-to-edge photos, or add a few millimetres if the file is going to be printed and trimmed.
- Crop before uploading if a photo has a lot of desk or floor around the page. It wastes space and makes the file bigger.
- Very large batches use a lot of memory. If the browser slows down, build two PDFs and join them with the Merge PDF tool.
