Choosing the right settings

Format and resolution decide the trade-off between sharpness and file size.

  • Use PNG for pages with text, tables or line art. It is lossless, so small type stays legible.
  • Use JPG for pages that are mostly photographs. The files are far smaller and the quality loss is hard to see.
  • Raise the resolution if the image will be printed or zoomed into. Screen use rarely needs the highest setting.
  • Lower the resolution for long documents. Rendering hundreds of pages at high quality is slow and memory-hungry.
  • Take the ZIP if you need more than a couple of pages — it saves clicking through every thumbnail.
  • Remember the output is a picture, so the text is no longer selectable. Use PDF to DOCX if you need editable text.
